An original lot of 14 World War Two vintage letters including the envelopes written by Howard D. Thompson of the 387th Service Squadron. One of the letters has a few words cut out by a censor. The following are some excerpts from some of the letters: Somewhere in Italy July 14 1944 Dead Dad Not very busy this afternoon so will write you a letter at least start it am here alone now as they took my boy I had working with me and put in the warehouse.......Yes Dad it was really bad here when the Germans were here and the people are still in almost as bad a state as then. It is queer to watch them harvest there grain.........No Dad I didn't get to see the Pope, the boys up there on that front are doing great and we all hope they will soon be on there way into Berlin, the Russians are doing good too and I would like to see all three fronts come together and take Berlin and all there is left of it....Howard Somewhre in Italy Aug. 23 1944 Dear Mom and Dad It has been quite some time since I last wrote you but I have been so busy and our mail hasn't been coming through very good either and yesterday and today was the frist time I have gotten any mail for over 10 days. But now that the invasion of Southern France is over our mail has started to come through....On the 21 of Aug. the Squadron celebrated the 1st aniversary overseas and we had a party and a lot of the boys really celebrated.......Howard Oct 12, 1942 Dearest Mom Dearest just rec. your very nice long letter as usuall so glad to get it.....You can at least know that I am doing my part in this war. The job of repairing the bombers is a big job a job that the boys flying them depend on us to keep them flying. I am proud to be one of the boys to keep them flying. It takes about 25 boys on the ground to keep a bomber in the air. The boys are listening to the President giving his talk. When he was on his tour around the country he visited Pendleton Field I had the pleasure of seeing him. It was sort of a thrill to be in the uniform of the U.S. Army stand before him in parade rest then at attention.......(signature) Somewhere in Italy Aug. 6 1944 Dearest Dad and Mom Here I am at last with the letter I should have written a long time ago but have been so busy am all caught up now......I will have to have longer sleeves put on my clothes so all the decorations can be put on. We have the bronze star to put on our campaign ribbon and we should have another on to but I don't know if we will get it or not.......the way the boys are doing over here and in Russia things may change for the best......Mom and Dad the bronze I have to put on my campaign ribbon is for beng here in Italy and in a combat area. I see by the papers here that quite a few boys have gotten in trouble there in the States for wearing over seas ribbons and not been out of the States, they can go to any of the PX there and buy them...I wear mine all the time when I am wearing my khakis and I am proud of them to.....Howard Somewhere in Italy June 19, 1944 Dearest Dad Mom Rec a lot of mail yesterday today....We have so much paper work to do now I remember before we came overseas they told us there wouldn't be so much paper work but gosh it is 4 times more than we ever had....Dad over here in Italy they censor different than in Africa so I must have said something I shouldn't have. Myrtle said her letter was clipped too. It is hard some times a person will slip at times....Italy is pretty well shot up but Rome was spared at least so all the big ancient buildings were mostly saved.......Howard N. Africa April 3, 1944 Dearest Dad Mom Rec your nice letter of Feb. 27 Dad was so glad to get it......Yes I am gettng pretty well aclimated to this country am getting to look like a Arab more each day. I wished you could see some of them. You no doubt think of a Arab as a person of this country riding on a fast horse with a rifle slung over his shoulder raiding towns killing people like you see in the movies at home.....The ones here are dressed in robes if you want to call them robes butt they are just rags.............They will steal the teeth out of your mouth at nite if you leave your mouth open. They ride on donkeys or in two wheeled carts....Howard Overall the letters are in very good condition. If you have any questions feel free to ask.
