During the 1880's, Hawaii's King David Kalakaua commissioned several of the world's most celebrated artists to create six denominations of bank notes for the Hawaiian Kingdom.
Less than ten years later, all but a few of the magnificent works of art had been destroyed by an unelected group of revolutionaries in a vain (and unsuccessful) attempt to erase the memory of Hawaii's Monarchy from the minds of the Kingdom's loyal subjects.
Only one authentic bank note is known to exist. Sold on Mar. 23, 2006 for $268,000.00 by the Doyle Auction House in New York, it was part of the estate of Samuel Mills Damon, former head of First Hawaiian Bank.
ABOUT THE RESTORATIONS.
While on a visit to the Hawai’i State Archives in 1997, I came upon a century old reference book about Hawai’i’s currency during the Kingdom's days. Accompanying the story were Daguerreotype photographs the banknotes. With permission, I made a copy of each page.
During the ensuing nine years, pixel by pixel, I restored the extreme detail of every engraving and then enhanced their original style by painting each bank note in full color. Every detail of each bank note has been accurately recreated. When selecting colors, great weight was given to the colors of the period and the particular image. Today you will see my work in some of Hawai’i’s finest homes, hotels and resorts and in schools, universities, museums and for sale on all major Islands at some of the Aloha State’s finest art purveyors.
When mounted with mattes and framed with rare Hawai'i Koa wood frames you will have a keepsake of the Kingdom of Hawai'i unlike any other. There is no equal in beauty and detail of the only currency of the only monarchy in the history of the United States.
