SEE PHOTOGRAPH/S AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE! VERY GOOD CONDITION - NO RESERVE - LOW OPENING BID!!! This auction is for a superb large size hardback edition entitled "The Decline of the Castle," by Dr. M. W. Thompson, lavishly illustrated with ONE-HUNDRED FOURTEEN illustrations, photographs and plans. It was published by Magna Books, of Leicester, in 1994. In this book the author examines the decline of the castle as both fortification and seigneurial residence over the two and a half centuries that preceded the English Civil War. He also relates alterations in design to contemporary social changes and devotes particular attention to the rapid decline of Tudor times and to the massive destruction wrought by Parliamentary forces during the Civil War and Commonwealth. A concluding chapter examines some remarkable latterday examples of the genre, such as Burges' Castell Coch in Glamorgan and Lutyens' Castle Drogo. The contents include: · Fifteenth Century Contrasts · Warfare in England and France · Accelerating Decay · Destruction · Derelict or Abandoned Castles in the Fifteenth Century · Condition of Castles Mentioned in Leland’s Itinerary · Parliamentary Demolition, Proposed or Executed, 1642-60 · Demolition of Montgomery Castle, Powys, June to October 1649 … and more … The book measures 10 inches x 7.75 inches. The 211 pages are nice and neat. The binding is very good with no loose or missing pages. There are NO inscriptions and NO other ink or pencil markings in the book. The original illustrated hardback cover is in very good condition, having been largely protected by the matching original dust jacket. The illustrated dust jacket is in very good condition for its age. A wonderfully illustrated edition – the starting price is just ONE PENNY, with NO RESERVE, and I WILL SELL to the highest bidder. I am more than happy to combine shipping on multiple purchases and cost will be determined on the total weight of your wins (see below for costs and full details).
