In this area, we offer original prints from German natural history works of Lorenz Oken. Each print is over 160 years old, has original hand coloring and is extremely charming. Perfect for framing!
The work: Lorenz Oken, Naturgeschichte für alle Stände (Natural History For All Social Ranks), published by Hoffmann in Stuttgart, Germany, 1833-1843. Lorenz Oken (August 1, 1779 – August 11, 1851), was a German naturalist. Oken born in Bohlsbach in Swabia and studied natural history and medicine at the University of Würzburg. He went on to the University of Göttingen, where he became a Privatdozent (unsalaried lecturer), and shortened his name to Oken. As Lorenz Oken, he published a small work entitled Grundriss der Naturphilosophie, der Theorie der Sinne, mit der darauf gegründeten Classification der Thiere (1802). This was the first of a series of works which established him as the leader of the movement of "Naturphilosophie" in Germany. The natural history works were illustrated throughout with vivid and detailed engravings, that were scientifically accurate and sophisticated in their composition and execution.
