In the United States during the Great Depression, the government set up the W.P.A. (Works Progress Administration) to try to stimulate the economy by providing income opportunities, especially in the rural parts of the country. This needlework was made as a result of this program. Although it does not show up well in the photo, the WPA logo of the initials WPA within a keystone is stamped on the cloth. The work measure 16" x 18". The colors of this needlework are really beautiful, a rich crimson red and a vibrant royal blue. As you can see in the photo, there is some discoloration and a hole in the selvage edge of the fabric, but you could incorporate this piece into a tapestry, pillow or upolstery, and the hole would not show. This is a gorgeous piece of American history.
