An original World War One letter. It is dated, France Sept 27, 1918. The letter reads:
Dear Ma and Pa
I am still waiting for some mail and don't think we are ever going to get any. Our Commanding Officer don't think enough of us to have the mail looked up....I am feeling fine and today I think every Yank in France has his Spirit just as high as we have it. It is almost finished right now. One of our boys who can talk German was talking to a wounded German Officer and he claimed from his view it would be over in a month or two. I expect you will know by the time you receive this letter that we have pushed Fritze off of his big stand by Verdun. That is a big feather in the U.S. Army's hat. For Ma the French and English could not do it. They have held it now for three long years. You can also say that Joe has done his little bit right in it. Last night we were sleeping by a battery of heavy artillery about 7 or eight miles behind the lines. When I get back home I think I will have to hire a few kids to beat tin pans while I sleep for I am now so I can sleep while they are puting periods in the (Peace Terms.) and believe me they sure have put in a pile. Now don't get worrying about me for I am just as safe as I would be at home......it will all be over soon. These German prisoners who come in are tickled to death to be a prisoner and all we have to do is say souvenirs for me and they give you a ring or a watch......Pvt Jos. V. Shea
