An original World War One letter which includes the envelope. The envelope has the send to address of Toledo, Iowa. It is dated, Camp Jackson June 19, 1918. The letter reads:
Dear Alice
Well I guess you have had a rest from all my cards letters for the last few days....we have been fixing up around our barracks, cleaning and filling little ditches holes and making other ditches for the water to run in. We also fixed up a mount in front of our barracks and put Motor School on it......There was a carnival coming in to camp about two blocks from this barracks yesterday and they are taiing down their shows now.....we had some more excitment down there I don't know where the fellows got any fun out of it but about 400 or 500 hundred soldiers were chasing a hunch-back n_ger kid around and trying to make him dance. I thought it was mean but these southern people do not have much time for the nig_ers. They have special places for them in trains, restaurants, theaters and all such places. There certainly are a lot of them and they are the real black ones........Love Chrissie
