Don't forget to check out my ebay STORE listings, for some great items at rock bottom prices! This is an excavated specimen, one of only two I've ever seen, despite years spent digging in and around Biddeford. There's a small surface ping in the base heel, and a side of lip chip shot clearly and head on in the pix. There's some content stain, visible in the pictures. NO other damage. Circa 1900-1915, standing a tall 8 and 3/4 inches, mold-blown by hand, with a hand-tooled top and lip in the crown style. I believe the color was supposed to be clear, but it's actually the color of Mexican tap water. As for the crown top? It was patented in the USA in 1892. Now as any student of history knows, American patents from this era don't mean much. A patent doesn't in any way indicate credit to the patentee as inventor, if you know what I'm saying. A short perusal through any story of George Washington Carver's life will show you that elegantly. The crown style had been in use overseas for several years prior to this patent, though the tops were actually used to facilitate an easy system to tie a cork down. In the USA, this style was patented in 1892, but I believe it was after 1900 before a steel crown cap was ever used. Before that (and many companies held on to this for another couple decades) they were closed with lightning type stoppers and occasionally corks. The neck is simply fantastic, it's got marked bulge and thickness wave, and there's a LONG band of tightly-packed and VIVID circular hand-tooling lines. There's a couple of SWEET stretched-bubbles in the neck as well. The base is overly thick in the front, and has some wicked cool wave, dives right down towards the back of the bottle. If you look at the picture of the base, you'll see how oblong and out of symmetry the inside is, due to killer thickness wave. It's embossed in four BOLD lines, one on the shoulder, three in a circular slug-plate; REGISTERED MATSON BROS. BOTTLING CO. BIDDEFORD, MAINE It's always good to see MAINE spelled out like that, rather than abbreviated, which is the norm. A seriously rare Maine straight side with a killer crude hand-tooled top.
